Ask someone to picture an elegant event and there’s a good chance a Chiavari chair is somewhere in the room. They may not know the name, but they know the shape — the slim frame, open back and distinctive spindles.
We carry Chiavari chairs in five finishes: gold, silver, white, black and ghost. The chair stays the same, but changing the finish can have a surprisingly big effect on the overall look of an event.
One chair, five very different looks
One of the reasons Chiavari chairs work in so many different settings is that the frame doesn’t dictate the rest of the design. Instead, the finish becomes another element to coordinate with the venue, tables, linens, florals and lighting.
There isn’t a finish that’s inherently right for a wedding, corporate event or particular type of venue. It’s about the look you’re building around it.
The five finishes
Gold brings warmth to a room and gives the classic Chiavari shape a more traditional feel. It pairs easily with warm neutrals, greenery and richer colors, but it can work with everything from a formal ballroom to an outdoor reception.
Silver gives the same chair a cooler, brighter appearance. It can complement cool-toned palettes especially well, while still being neutral enough to work with a much wider range of designs.
White creates a clean, bright look. It can blend into a light, neutral design or provide contrast when it’s surrounded by stronger colors. How prominent it feels depends heavily on everything around it.
Black adds contrast and visual weight. In some designs it becomes a strong part of the look; in others, particularly with darker surroundings, it can recede and let the tables, lighting or décor draw more attention.
Ghost changes the chair more dramatically than any of the other finishes. The transparent frame allows more of the surrounding space to remain visible, which can make it an interesting choice when the venue, view or décor is already doing a lot of the visual work.
Each finish brings something different to the design, but none of them belongs exclusively to one kind of event. The right choice is the one that works with the rest of the room.
Cushions are a second decision
The cushion adds another opportunity to change how the chair works within the design. Matching the cushion closely to the frame creates a more unified look, while using a contrasting cushion makes the chair itself more noticeable.
It can also be used to connect the seating to other elements in the room, such as the linens or overall color palette.
They’re not just wedding chairs
Chiavari chairs may be closely associated with weddings, but the same basic chair can work across very different events.
Set in rows for a ceremony, placed around tables beneath a sailcloth tent, used for a corporate dinner or incorporated into a holiday party, the chair doesn’t determine what the event becomes.
That’s really the advantage of a Chiavari: it elevates the seating without deciding the style of the room. The finish, linens, lighting, florals and surrounding décor get to do that.
What to pair them with
Chiavari seating can be one part of a much larger event design:
- Farm tables and cocktail tables can change the character of the seating arrangement completely, from formal dining to a more natural, open setup.
- Lounge furniture gives guests another place to gather beyond their assigned seats.
- Chandeliers and décor bring another layer into the room and can help tie the seating, tables and surrounding space together.
Choosing yours
If you’re deciding between finishes, don’t look at the chair by itself. Look at the whole event: the venue or tent, tables, linens, lighting, florals and the colors already in the space.
Sometimes the chair should stand out. Sometimes it should almost disappear into the design.
