Where the butter knife sits
It lives on the bread and butter plate, not on the table. Lay it across the top of the plate with the handle to the right and the blade turned inward. The plate itself sits above the forks, to the left of the setting.
That placement is the reason it is easy to forget. It is the only piece that belongs to a plate rather than to the tablecloth, so it gets counted with the china and then missed on the flatware order.
Planning your count
Count one per bread plate, not one per guest. Those numbers usually match. If bread is served family style with butter on the table, count one per plate anyway. Guests reach for their own rather than share a communal spreader.
Skip it entirely if bread is not on the menu. A butter knife with no bread plate under it is the kind of detail that reads as a mistake.
